This week: extra baggage fees, delays
The new fees for an “extra” bag kick in this week. Airlines will start charging for more than one checked bag. Some airlines are charging $25 if you want to check more than one bag, and even more if you check more than two. Much more.
The result will be delays for two reasons: Many people won’t be aware of the extra charge and will waste time arguing as the rest of us wait to check in. The other reason is that more people will start carrying stuff onto the plane, causing delays as the overhead bins fill up faster, leaving later boarders with no room on board for their carryon bags.
If you have medicine or other personal effects you don’t want taken from you on the plane and hauled off to become checked bags, take care where you put things. Keep a small toiletries bag with your in-flight and final destination necessities so that if your roll aboard is taken off the plane, you won’t be in trouble if you somehow land without it.
