British Airways says it estimates 15,000 bags are stranded at its new facility at Heathrow, but others estimate as many as 20,000 bags are “left luggage.” BA has cancelled a fifth of its flights, hotels are fully booked, and stranded passengers have nowhere to go.

- A group of school pupils on flight BA285 to San Francisco also said they were told by the airline that their bags were not on board and they could choose whether or not to travel. They were bound for a skiing trip.
“It could ruin it because we are scheduled to start skiing tomorrow,” said one schoolgirl, Natalie Bakhurst.
Time to consider what kind of trip insurance you need to cover costs when your bags don’t make it or you’re stranded and there are no hotels in the vicinity.
