California Backs Off Real ID - Update | Threat Level from Wired.com

If states don’t comply with Real ID, their residents won’t be able to use their driver’s licenses as identification for entry into federal buildings, getting help at the Social Security Administration, and for TSA screening (see the other post regarding flying with no ID). Your passports will be acceptable identification, though.

  •  ”For about $8 per license, Real ID will give law enforcement and security officials a powerful advantage against falsified documents, and it will bring some peace of mind to citizens wanting to protect their identity from theft by a criminal or illegal alien,” Chertoff said.

Not. Nine of the killers on September 11, 2001, had real IDs fraudulently issued by a Virginia DMV state employee for some extra cash. And as for peace of mind to citizens wanting to protect their identity from theft, see the earlier post about unauthorized access of files by contract employees.
